No. 19 'Dogs Shut Out Spartans in WAC First Round

FRESNO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team was sharp in its first round match at the Western Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M. The 'Dogs shut out San Jose State 4-0 and improved to 18-7 on the season. Fresno State now faces New Mexico State in the semifinals.
Fresno State got out to an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Junior Danon Beatty and senior Jacqueline Haskett beat San Jose State's Guzman and Hadzisabic, 8-0 at the No. 3 spot. No. 31-ranked sophomores Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova followed with an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot to clinch the point.
Petukhova, ranked No. 22 in the country, gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 advantage after winning in straight sets at the No. 2 spot. She beat Amber Silverstone, 6-2, 6-0 for her eighth-straight victory and 37th overall on the season.
Junior Tinesta Rowe was the second singles winner, defeating Sanda Hadzisabic, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior and 16th-ranked Melanie Gloria clinched the match for Fresno State after breezing past Ashley Tavita 6-4, 6-0. Gloria improved to 25-8 overall and 17-5 in dual matches.
