FRESNO, Calif. - The men's golf team posted a first round 17-over par 305 to finish the day in third place at the Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose, Calif. The Bulldogs are 19-strokes out of the lead heading into the second round.
Grant Doverspike will try to defend his title shooting the low round for the Bulldogs on Monday with a one-over par 73 to tie for fourth place. Doverspike is in a three-way tie for fourth place six strokes from the leader. Matt Ryan posted a four over 76 to tie for 12th place followed by Michael Gideon who tied for 19th place. Gideon shot a 77 to finish the day five-over par. Todd Angel tied for 26th place with a 79 followed by Brad Wyatt who tied for 29th with an 80.
"Our play in the first round wasn't very good," said head coach Mike Watney. "This is a championship golf course. What I mean by that, it will separate the good players from the not-so-good players. The guys were a little off today but we know on a tough course like this we can make a comeback. With the girls last week we saw that 19-strokes is not insurmountable."
In the team competition, New Mexico State grabbed an 11-stroke lead with a two-under par team score 286. All four counting scores for the Aggies were 75 or lower and were among the top 11 individual scores.
Boise State is in second place at 297 paced by Merritt's 68. Fresno State at 305, San Jose State at 307 and Nevada at 308 rounded out the top five teams.
Idaho at 309, Louisiana Tech and Utah State at 311 and Hawaii at 324 complete the team scoring. The current individual leader is New Mexico State's Joshua Stewart who shot a five-under 67 followed by Boise State's Troy Merritt, the national leader in stroke average. Merritt entered the 54-hole championship with a 69.22 stroke average and shot 68 on Monday.
The championship continues with 18 holes on April 29 and concludes with a final 18 on April 30. The Bulldogs will begin teeing off at 9 a.m. and live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
