FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team's quest for a third straight WAC championship takes place this weekend at Sacramento State. The Bulldogs, who hold a one-game lead over Nevada, begin a four-game series with the Hornets on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
The teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. and the series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
Saturday's and Sunday's game can be heard live on 580 KMJ. Fresno State is 31-25 overall and 19-9 in WAC play. Sacramento State is 21-30 and 12-15 in conference play.
Nevada is 18-10 in conference play and concludes the regular season this weekend with a four-game series at San Jose State.
Fresno State leads the overall series with Sacramento State 95-23. Fresno State has won the last 11 meetings against the Hornets. In 2007, the Dogs won 16-7, 8-1, 5-2, and 10-2.
Sacramento State is hitting .311 as a team and is led by the offensive production of Gabe Jacobo who is hitting .377 with 13 homeruns and 61 RBIs. David Flores is also batting .374. As a team, the Hornets pitching staff has a 6.32 era.
Fresno State is hitting .294 as a team and led by the play of Alan Ahmady's .383 batting average. He has a team-best 70 RBIs and he has also belted 10 homeruns. Erik Wetzel is hitting .362 and Steve Susdorf .349 with eight homeruns and 63 RBIs. Tommy Mendonca has a team-best 14 homeruns.
Tanner Scheppers leads the Bulldog pitching staff with a 2.93 era an 8-2 record. Scheppers is second in the nation in strikeouts with 109.
Jason Breckley became the third different Bulldog pitcher to be named WAC Pitcher of the Week. Last week he pitched in two games where he tossed 4.2 innings and striking out three. Against No. 25 Long beach State he tossed one inning, struck out two and allowed no hits. He then picked up his second save of the season, pitching 3.2 innings with a strikeout to help the Bulldogs to a 5-3 victory over San Jose State. Breckley is fourth on the all-time career save list with 11.
