Margie Wright Wins 1,300th Game

FRESNO, Calif. - It would take extra innings but the No. 9/10 Fresno State softball team would defeat New Mexico State 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night at Bulldog Diamond. Fresno State improves to 47-9 on the year and head coach Margie Wright earned her 1,300th career victory, making her the first coach in the history of softball to reach this historic milestone.
Morgan Melloh was on fire to start the game, striking out the first five batters. Melloh finished with 13 strikeouts, to tie her second-highest total of the season. She now has 372 strikeouts on the year, ranking her third in a single season in Fresno State history. With 48 appearances on the year, Melloh ranks fourth in a single season in school history. Melloh also moved up in the single-season record books with her 35th complete game, tying her for ninth. Her innings pitched, now 284.2 rank her seventh. At 35-5, she is now just one win shy of the single season school record of 36.
Melloh and Haley Perkins hit back-to-back singles to the shortstop in the bottom of the third. They both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Haley Gilleland and scored on a single to left field by Aja Scheuber for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
The Aggies tied up the game in the top of the sixth with two runs.
Haley Perkins led off the bottom of the ninth as she was hit by a pitch and would score on a single by Scheuber for a 3-2 Bulldog victory.
Scheuber had three hits in the game and had all three RBI's for the `Dogs.
The Bulldogs will host New Mexico State Saturday in a doubleheader to end the regular season beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Saturday is Public Safety Day and Senior night. Fresno State softball will honor six seniors prior to game one.
Saturday's games will be aired live on CBS College Sports with Tammy Blackburn and Jason Knapp calling the action. Game one will be live on 790 ESPN the Deuce with Christian Lukens calling the game.
