FRESNO, Cailf. - The Fresno State Bulldogs shot 18-over par 306 in the first round of its first-ever NCAA appearance. Fresno State is in 19th place at the NCAA Div. I Western Regional hosted by Sacramento State at the par 72, 6,338 yard Lincoln Hills Golf Club in Lincoln, Calif.
Second Team All-WAC junior Taylor Siebert leads the `Dogs tied for 25th place. Siebert drained three birdies to shoot one-over par 73. The Bulldogs other three counting scores came from 2008 WAC Champion Laura Luethke, Pia Escandon, and Hali Coppin. Esacndon and Luethke both tied for 65th place with a five-over 77. Coppin tied for 85th place with a 79 and freshman Chelsea Czinski tied for 94th place shooting an 80.
"Taylor putted really good today," said head coach Angie Cates. "She had a lot of close birdies today that and she capitalized on most o those. Tomorrow we have to go out and play very well, the teams ahead of us aren't going to come back to us so we have to go out and play really solid golf the next two days."
Led by Paula Moreno's 68, USC scored 283 and holds a 5-stroke lead over Tulsa who shot 287 and was the only other team to finish below par. UNLV sits third at an even-par 288 while Arkansas (291) and Oklahoma State (293) completed the top five.
Individually, Alison Walshe of Arizona matched Moreno for the first day low. The pair hold a 1-stroke lead over four individuals who shot 69. That group is comprised of Arkansas' Stacy Lewis, Arizona State's Azahara Munoz, Oklahoma State's Jaclyn Sweeney and Tulsa's Michaela Cavener.
The tournament will continue with the second round on Friday. The first Bulldog tee time is set for 9:20 a.m. and live scoring can be found on www.golfstat.com. The top eight teams from the three-round tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships.
