FRESNO, Calif. - Preparations for the upcoming 2008 Fresno State women's soccer season began on Wednesday when the Bulldogs hit the field for practice. The Dogs practiced three times on Wednesday with the opening practice session being a fitness test at 6 a.m., where the majority of the players passed and performed well.
Later in the day in the Bulldogs scrimmaged for an hour and performed other drills.
"There was a lot of energy and excitement to play in the first 15 minutes," said Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe. "There were a few goals and nice finishes."
The Bulldogs return three seniors, one junior and 10 sophomores from last year's team that advanced to the WAC tournament championship game. This year the Bulldog coaching staff has added eight freshmen to the squad and they liked what they saw in the first day of practice.
"I was encouraged with the freshmen blending in with the team," said Head Coach Steve Springthorpe. "They looked like they have always been with the team and no sight of nerves."
The Bulldogs play an exhibition game on Saturday, August 16 against Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m., before opening the season on August 22 in San Francisco.
The Bulldogs are coming off another spectacular season after going 13-7-1. The `Dogs finished second at the WAC tournament losing to Hawai'i in a tough championship match 1-0.
