Bulldogs Finish up at the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men and women golf teams finished today at the 2008 Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. The Bulldogs combined score was 1795 to put them in sixth place among the nine other schools that competed. Oregon State placed first in the combined event with a total of 1757.
The men's golf team (285-290-291 - 866) finished in seventh place. Host Oregon State took home a first place finish with a total of 853 after three rounds of competition.
Junior Grant Doverspike led the men's line-up with (75-66-72-213) shooting three under par and a top five finish. His score left him five strokes behind the leader Diego Velasquez of Oregon State (208).
"Grant came on strong in the last two rounds," Coach Mike Watney said. "I'm proud of him. He picked up where he left off last season."
Senior Matt Ryan (69-72-75-216) and sophomore Bryan Hogan (7-75-71-216) both finished in a tie for 16th place. Michael Gideon (71-77-73 -221) finished in 31st place and Brad Wyatt (79-77-76) finished in 47th place.
"Despite his finish, Michael really showed his potential, he played well," said Watney.
The women's team moved up the leader board past Washington State finishing in fourth. The Bulldogs shot 311-306-312 - 929. The host team, Oregon State, finished first with 904 beating out the Oregon (906). San Francisco took third (911).
Hali Coppin (78-82-73-233) and Chelsea Czinski (80-71-82-233) led the Dogs, both finishing in a tie for 13th. Pia Escandon finished at 19-over and was tied for 23rd. Taylor Siebert and Louisa Lies both finished tied for 28th (22-over).
"Hali had a very solid come back after a tough second round," Coach Angie Cates-Moore said. "She carried our team today."
"We have to have more than just one person per round to carry us. We have to collectively carry the team in order to do better."
Oregon's Kendra Little finished with medalist honors shooting 215(1-under).
