FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team returned home to the Save Mart Center on Saturday afternoon and picked up another five-set victory over the visiting Boise State Broncos. Set scores were 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25 and 15-11. The `Dogs sweep the season series for the first time since 2003. In 2004 the Bulldogs two took from Boise State, one in the WAC Tournament and split the regular season series.
The `Dogs improve to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in WAC play. The four wins in conference are the most by a Bulldog team since they won four in 2005.
Boise State drops to 2-18 and 2-6 in the WAC.
The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead with two service aces by senior setter Allanah Munson to start the match.
The Broncos rallied to take a 10-5 lead and won the set 25-19.
Fresno State was much improved in set two, and although there were 10 ties and two lead changes, the `Dogs took control to win the set 25-21 and tied the match at 1-1.
The `Dogs hit .333 in set two and was led by Baylee Platt with seven kills and just one error.
Set three also went the way of the Bulldogs as they hit .312 on their way to a 25-18 win and taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the set, the `Dogs had a seven point advantage at 18-11 and fought off a late Bronco rally that got them within three (20-17).
Boise State took control of set four, and while the Bulldogs stayed close and even tied the set at 15, the Broncos held on for a 25-20 lead to tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set.
Behind the serving of Munson once again, the `Dogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set five and never looked back as they rolled to a 15-10 victory.
Platt led the `Dogs with 15 kills, followed by Lauren Berger with 13 and Parker, who posted a new career-high, with 11, respectively. Munson led the team with 24 assists and Lisa Gera contributed 17. Kelly Mason had 20 digs for the `Dogs.
As a team, the `Dogs hit .196 and beat the broncos in kills, digs and hitting percentage.
"It was really important that we were able to put an outside hitter in to go all the way around and Baylee stuck with our game plan today," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "It's very helpful to have two outside hitters with Kelli (Parker) and Baylee who have terminating power and really went for it today. Overall it's nice to get over the hump and get our fourth win in the WAC beating the three last year and it's important that we were able to beat a team twice."
Fighting Spirit
The team won the `Fighting Spirit' this afternoon.
"We didn't just rely on one person this afternoon," Netherby-Sewell added. "Everyone put on a great effort from the minute we started warm up until the end of the match so I was pleased with the fight today."
