FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team squares off against some of the elite players in college tennis at the ITA Northwest Regional on Friday through Monday in Berkeley, Calif.
For the first time in more than 2.5 years, senior Anastasia Petukhova will not compete alongside Renata Kucerkova in doubles action. The duo forms the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country, but this weekend, Petukhova joins forces with freshman Bianca Modoc. Petukhova and Modoc's first round matchup is against California's Catie Visico and Stanford's Natalie Dillon on Friday at 9 a.m.
Bulldogs Melissa McQueen and Laura Pola will also compete in doubles, when they meet up with Santa Clara's Maggie McGeorge and Carmen Pham.
In singles action, the 22nd-ranked Petukhova drew a first round bye to automatically advance to the second round. Three other Bulldogs will compete in the first round - Modoc will face Chelsea Patton of Eastern Washington, Pola squares off against Santa Clara's Kacie Wagener and McQueen battles Julia Hansen of Pacific.
Last season Bulldog-alumnus Melanie Gloria won the singles title, while Petukhova and Kucerkova won the doubles championship at the Regional.
After the ITA Regional, Fresno State will next be in action at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Conn.
