`Dogs Battle Idaho to Five Sets

MOSCOW, Idaho - It was a battle in the Western Athletic Conference match-up between Fresno State and Idaho's volleyball teams on Saturday afternoon in Moscow, Idaho, but the Vandals prevailed in five sets, by set scores of 22-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-10. The `Dogs drop to 8-7 on the season and 1-2 in WAC play while Idaho improves to 2-1 in the WAC.
It was the first time that Fresno State had taken Idaho to five sets since 2006.
Points rallied in set one until Idaho took a three point lead (17-1). The Vandals maintained that lead until the `Dogs rallied and kills by Cecilia Agraz and Baylee Platt and two Idaho errors, put the `Dogs ahead 21-20. The `Dogs went on to take the set 25-22 with kills by Lauren Berger and Marissa Brand.
Idaho never surrendered the lead in set two, going up by as many as 10. Up 10-7, the Vandals scored six-straight points to break open the set and even the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 victory.
The `Dogs had small leads in the third set and Idaho stayed in the set until a kill by freshman Taylor Horton put the `Dogs up for good 18-17.
The `Dogs hit a match-high .302 with 18 kills in set three as they took the set 25-22 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Idaho tied the match once again by taking the fourth set by the same score as the second. The `Dogs got within three (19-16), but then the Vandals went on a 6-0 run to take the set.
The `Dogs took an early 8-6 lead but Idaho took an 11-10 lead and scored the final four points to take the match.
Berger and Brianna Clarke led the `Dogs with 13 kills each. Allanah Munson posted a double-double with 24 assists and 12 digs. Kelly Mason (22), Meghan Moss (12) and Agraz (10) each recorded new season-high's in digs. Lisa Gera added a season-high 22 assists.
Fighting Spirit
This afternoon's `Fighting Spirit' went to junior libero Kelly Mason.
"Kelly stuck with the match plan and performed consistently in all five sets," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "She is fighting her habits and buying into the training."
The `Dogs return home to host a WAC team for the first time in 2009 as they host Utah State on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
