FRESNO, Calif. - After a nice start to the season and win over WAC rival New Mexico State, the Bulldog equestrian team is ranked ninth in the first coaches' poll of the season.
South Carolina is the team to catch according to the national equestrian coaches. They voted the Gamecocks No. 1 in the inaugural coaches' poll of the 2009-10 season.
South Carolina earned 41 points in the poll, five ahead of No. 2 Baylor.
A total of 12 points separate the first six teams, one of the closest groupings in the two-year history of the coaches' poll.
Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M are ranked No. 3 through 5, respectively, with one point separating each team.
Oklahoma State, a team that finished third at the 2009 VENC Championships, sits in sixth place. The Cowgirls are followed by fellow Big 12 team Kansas State.
TCU is ranked No. 8 with 19 points, followed by Fresno State with 16 points and South Dakota State with 13.
The Dogs have a tough road trip this weekend in Texas, taking on No. 8 TCU and No. 6 Texas A&M. In a few weeks, Fresno State's tough schedule continues with a road trip into the SEC to take on No. 4 Georgia and No. 1 South Carolina.
The collegiate coaches competing under the Varsity Equestrian Championship umbrella initiated the national poll.
The poll will be released bi-monthly with the next announcement scheduled for Oct. 20, 2009.
