FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country season came to a close Saturday at the NCAA West Regional in Springfield, Ore. The Bulldog men ran in their first 10K of the season, taking 17th among the 28 highly-ranked teams from the region.
The field of competition ran deep at Saturday's race as top-ranked Stanford led all teams, filling in the first three spots of the race. No. 7 Portland upset No. 3 Oregon for second place as the host Ducks finished third. Washington, Cal Poly and Arizona State rounded out the top 5.
"We didn't follow our race plan today," said cross country coach Sean McManus. "You can't expect to perform well when you do that. But we only have one senior, so we'll be back to correct those mistakes next year."
Erick Garcia led the team as the `Dog's top finisher, clocking a 32:45.49 for 78th place, despite getting tripped and then trampled on around the halfway mark. The junior was the second-place finisher from the WAC behind Boise State's Jeff Howard.
Paul Zwama took the second spot for Fresno State, finishing just a few ticks back of Garcia. Zwama timed a 32:48.49 in his first NCAA Regional to take 81st overall.
The Bulldog's lone senior, Frank Sanders, was the team's third finisher. Sanders ran a 33:02.90 for 95th in his final cross country race.
Danny Vartanian and Eric Battles filled in the fourth spots for Fresno State, finishing within .30 seconds of each other. Vartanian ran a 33:51.26 to take 130th in his first 10K. Battles took the final scoring spot with a 33:51.57 for 131st.
Carson Keller and Elijah Carrillo also competed in the NCAA Regional to round out the team's seven competitors.
Roxanne Sellick represented the Bulldogs women at the NCAA Regional running the 6K in 22:52.54. The redshirt senior placed 93rd among the 184 competitors to close out her cross country career.
The NCAA Regional marked the final race of the year for the Fresno State cross country teams.
