FORT WORTH, Texas - After a strong start to the game, the Fresno State women's basketball couldn't hang onto the lead and lost at TCU on Wednesday evening 63-52. Fresno State is now 1-2 while TCU improved to 2-0.
The Bulldogs shot 33 percent from the field but did out rebound the Lady Frogs 45-40. Fresno State had three players in double figures led by Jaleesa Ross' 15 points and a team-best nine rebounds. LaShay Fears had 11 and Joh-Teena Filipe had 10 points.
The Bulldogs shot the ball well in the first half as they were 14-for-27, good for 52 percent but the Bulldogs made only five field goals in the second half and did not make a 3-pointer in the final 20 minutes.
"We played a good team," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "TCU did a good job in the second half of tightening up its defense a little bit. I thought we missed a lot of shots on layups and free throws. We just have to be a team that learns how to finish it off. We are still at 25-30 minutes a game where we play pretty good basketball and then we really struggle for 10 minutes during the game."
Fresno State jumped out to a 21-8 lead to start the game with 9:55 to play in the first half. TCU then went on a 17-2 run to lead 25-23 with 3:44 to play until halftime. The Bulldogs retook the lead at 33-27 with under a minute to play and led 33-30 at the break.
Filipe opened the second half with a layup but then the Bulldogs struggled offensively as TCU took the lead for good at 40-37 with 12:46 left in the game. TCU led 55-43 four minutes left in the game and the Dogs got no closer than eight points the rest of the way
"We Are Your Team" The Bulldogs play their home opener on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Saint Mary's. Before the game the 2008-09 team will receive their championship rings and the championship and NCAA tournament banners will be dropped. For tickets click on the tickets link at the top of the page.
