`Dogs Win, Clinch Fifth Seed

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Fresno State picked up its 14th win of the season and seventh Western Athletic Conference win with a 3-0 sweep over San Jose State on Thursday night at Spartan Gym. Set scores were 25-23, 27-25 and 25-15. The `Dogs are 14-15 overall, their most regular season wins since 2004 and finished the WAC season at 7-9, which is the most wins in the league by a Bulldog team since 2003.
Fresno State also completed the season sweep of San Jose State for the first time since 2004.
With the Bulldog win and a 3-0 win for Idaho over Boise State, the `Dogs clinched the fifth seed in next week's WAC Tournament. Enough though Nevada lost in four sets at Utah State, they earned the fourth seed by virtue of head-to-head competition and will face the `Dogs Monday night in the first round.
San Jose State took control early of set one, cruising to a 17-9 lead. The `Dogs fought back as they scored four-straight points, three of which were blocks by Brianna Clarke and Lauren Berger to cut the lead within three, 17-14.
The `Dogs tied the set at 18 with a service ace by Clarke. Fresno State then took the lead at 24-23 with another service ace, this one from Allanah Munson. A solo block by Clarke on the first set point gave the `Dogs the 1-0 lead in the match.
Clarke led the `Dogs with four blocks in the set and the `Dogs had six total team blocks.
Fresno State jumped out to a 13-10 lead in set two before the Spartans tied it at 13-13. SJSU then took a two point lead at 17-15.
The set was tied at 17, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. The Spartans had set point at 24-23 but a Lacey Gera kill tied the set once again at 24.
Marissa Brand tied the set at 25 with a kill and back-to-back kills by Clarke gave the `Dogs the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bulldogs controlled set three, going up by as many as eight early (19-11) on their way to winning the set and the match.
Clarke and Parker led the team with seven kills a piece. Munson had 15 assists while Lisa Gera added 14, respectively. Kelly Mason had 17 digs. The `Dogs had 14.0 total blocks, just one shy of the school record for blocks in a three-set match.
Fighting Spirit
Tonight's `Fighting Spirit' went to the team.
"We Are Your Team" - The `Dogs head to Las Vegas to compete in the six-team WAC Tournament Nov. 22-25. Fresno State will play on Monday against Nevada.
