`Dogs End Season in WAC Semifinals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Fresno State Bulldog volleyball team put up a valiant effort against No. 3 Hawai'i in the Western Athletic Conference semifinals but fell in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17. The `Dogs end their season with a 15-16 overall record.
"We were proud that we earned the right to play the best team in the tournament and one of the best teams in the country for our last match," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We hope to always finish against the best team in the country."
Fresno State took an early lead at 2-0 in the opening set with a service error by Hawai'i and a block by Brianna Clarke and Lauren Berger. Hawai'i went off for five-straight points and never trailed after that, cruising to a 1-0 lead in the match. Kelli Parker led the `Dogs with three kills in the set.
Set two was much closer early on with four ties. The `Dogs tied for the last time at 8-8 with a service ace by Kelly Mason. Hawai'i went on to take the set by the same score as the first and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lacey Gera led the `Dogs with three kills in the set. The `Dogs hit a match-high .160 in the set.
Set three was tied at 3-3 and a kill by Baylee Platt gave the `Dogs the 4-3 lead. Hawai'i went up 16-10 but the `Dogs got within three at 19-16. The Rainbow Wahine though went on to take the set and the match.
Parker had four kills in the set.
Fresno State was led by Parker with eight kills. Allanah Munson had 14 assists and Mason had eight digs.
Hawai'i will take on New Mexico State in Wednesday's championship match at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU. The Aggies defeated Boise State 3-0 in the other semifinal.
Fighting Spirit
Tonight's `Fighting Spirit' went to the team. "I think as a whole they really became a unit this year," Netherby-Sewell added. "We've been through a lot and I think this tournament they played well as a group."
