DALLAS, Texas- Jaleesa Ross scored a career-high 33 points and tied her career high of 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Boston College defeated Fresno State 83-75 in the first game of the SMU Hoops For The Cure Tournament. Fresno State is now 2-3 and Boston College improved to 2-3.
Ross' 33 points is the first time a Bulldog has scored 30 points or more in game since Chantella Perera scored 33 on January 25, 2007. Ross was 12-for-27 from the field and hit six 3-pointers while playing 36 minutes. The Bulldog junior added a team-best four assists.
"She took the shots they gave her," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "She took open shots and her teammates shared the ball with her. She is good enough to put the ball in hole and thankfully she had a good game to help keep us close."
Emma Andrews came off the bench and gave the Bulldogs a nice spark as she scored 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field.
Fresno State shot 40.5 percent from the field while Boston College shot 50.8 percent. The Eagles out rebounded the Bulldogs 46-37. The Bulldogs hit 12 3-pointers on 29 attempts while Boston College was 8-of-14 from the 3-point line.
"I thought we played a quality opponent in Boston College," Wiggins said. "We were right there the whole game. We couldn't quite control the rebounding portion of the game. I thought we executed well. We showed that there is room for improvement but at the same time we played a good team today."
The Bulldogs never led in the game. After trailing 52-38 with 15:29 to play in the game, Fresno State scored 10 straight points to come within four at 52-48 with 13:18 to play after a 3-pointer by Ross. That would be the closest Fresno State would get as Boston College quickly went back up by 13 at 68-55 with 7:10 left in the game.
In the final minutes of the game Fresno State got within six points two different times.
Fresno State plays Hampton on Saturday at 3 p.m. Pacific Time at SMU.
