FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball headed into the Christmas break on a positive note as the Dogs defeated Pacific 63-33 on Tuesday evening at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs improved to 8-4 while the Tigers fell to 1-8.
Fresno State had three players in double figures led by Hayley Munro's 13 points and 10 rebounds. LaShay Fears had 13 points and Jaleesa Ross had 12 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs held Pacific to 27.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 32 Tiger turnovers. Taja Edwards and Marnique Arnold each had four steals.
"I was very pleased with our defensive effort and our ability to get better as the game went on," Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins said. "I felt like we needed to bounce back. This team has been very resilient after losses, which is the sign of a good group. We did a good job of keeping our dribble and create some offense when maybe it didn't look like there were opportunities. Our defense really helped our scoring tonight. We forced some turnovers that got our offense scoring."
For most of the first half the game was close as the Bulldogs clung to a slim one-to-two point lead. With 6:42 remaining Fresno State led 15-12 and then extended the margin to 20-12 following a three-point play by Ross with 3:50 to play until halftime.
The Bulldogs led 27-16 at halftime and methodically extended their lead in the second half to 33-18 four minutes into the final period. The lead grew to 51-20 with 5:58 remaining after a layup by Fears. In the first 14 minutes of the second half, Pacific only scored four points.
The Bulldogs biggest lead of the game was 37 at 63-26 with 2:34 remaining in the game.
Fresno State returns to the floor on December 30 when they play host to No. 2 Stanford at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $5 for adults and all high school students will be admitted for $2 with their high school student ID.
"The fans are a huge part of our energy," Ross said. "When they bring energy, we bring energy."
