Fresno State Concludes Cathedral City Classic Play

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Fresno State struck early but in the end, the No. 4 UCLA Bruins (13-2) were too much for the No. 14 Bulldogs (6-3) and won the final game at the Cathedral City Classic for both teams 10-2 in six innings.
Fresno State got a hold of UCLA and starting pitcher Donna Kerr early. In the top of the first with two outs, Caitlin Stiglich hit a single to center field then Michelle Moses hit a two run home run to center, her third of her career and second in two games. The Bulldogs would take a 2-0 lead.
UCLA would strike back in the bottom of the first to get one run. Leadoff hitter Amanda Kamekona would get a single and she would eventually score from third off of a single to right field by Megan Langenfeld to cut the lead to 2-1.
With two outs, UCLA would get two runs in on a single up the middle by Kaila Shull. Langefeld would then hit in one more run on a single to right field and Lisamarie Coronado would throw out the runner from second to end the second inning. UCLA would take a 4-2 lead after two.
UCLA would add to the lead in the fourth as Shull hit in Katie Schroeder from second for 5-2 lead. GiOnna DiSalvatore would then score from third on an error by Haley Gilleland. Another Bruin single would make it 7-2.
Bulldog freshman Mackenzie Oakes would then enter and take over for Bulldog starting pitcher Morgan Melloh with one out in the fourth. Melloh allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.
Langenfeld would get the first hit of the game off of Oakes in the bottom of the sixth with one out, a double to center field. She would score off of a double by Julie Barney as the Bruins would take an 8-2 lead. A single by Andrea Harrison would score Burney from third for a 9-3 UCLA lead.
Marti Reed would pinch run for Burney and advanced to second on a wild pitch then to third on a passed ball. She would score the winning run off of a single by Dani Yudin to end the game at 10-2 in six innings.
Coronado ended the game with two hits for the `Dogs. Melloh drops to 4-2 in the circle. Melloh drops to 4-2 in the circle. She had three strikeouts in the game and now has 510 in her career, passing Melanie Parrent on the Bulldog career strikeout list for ninth place.
The Bulldogs did become the first team however to not allow the Bruins a single home run in the game all season. Entering the game with the Bulldogs, UCLA had hit at least one home run in each of its 14 games.
The Bulldogs return to Fresno and host Utah Valley University in the home opener on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. for a single game at Bulldog Diamond.
