LAKEWOOD, Calif. - The No. 12 Fresno State softball team concluded play at the Mayfair Tournament at Mayfair Park hosted by Long Beach State on Sunday, dropping games to Cal State Northridge 1-0 and Long Beach State 8-0 in six innings. The Bulldogs are 8-6 on the year.
Game One
Bulldog starter Morgan Melloh and Matador starter Deborah Duran competed in a pitcher's duel in the second meeting between their teams this season. Melloh and the Bulldogs won the first game 1-0 in eight innings in the Cathedral City Kick-Off on opening weekend. This time, it was the Matadors that would get the shutout win.
The first hit of the game for either team came in the top of the third with one out. It was a blooper to right field by Duran.
First hit off of Duran was single to center by Caitlin Stiglich. The Bulldog catcher continued her hot hitting from the Wisconsin game Saturday night where she was four-for-four and had two of the five Bulldog hits in the game. Ryane Petersen and Lisamarie Coronado each got hits in the inning as well for the `Dogs but they couldn't get a run across the board..
CSUN then scored the only run in the game as Tracy Allen doubled to the right field line and would score off of a single to center by Jaci Carlsen for a 1-0 CSUN lead in the top of the fifth.
Fresno State rallied in the bottom of the seventh and had runner's on the corners with two outs but Hannah Fraijo picked up her first career save for the Matadors.
Melloh drops to 5-4 in the circle while Duran is now 6-4. Melloh struck out eight batters and allowed one run on four hits.
Nicole Angene got the fifth hit of the game for the `Dogs.
Game Two
Freshman pitcher Mackenzie Oakes got her third start for the `Dogs and would leave in the first after giving up a two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the first to Jennifer Griffin as the host 49ers took a 2-0 lead.
Oakes would get the loss, her first of her career and dropped to 3-1 in the circle.
Melloh entered to replace Oakes and pitched three shutout innings until giving up four runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman Michelle Moses then switched from first base to the circle for her second appearance pitching on the season in the fourth. She would allow two runs in the sixth and Long Beach State won 8-0 in six innings.
The first hit of the game for the Bulldogs off of LBSU's Brooke Turner came in the top of the fifth to lead off the inning by Angene. The only other hit of the game off of Turner was by Haley Perkins.
