FRESNO, Calif. - With a 7-0 victory over Penn on Wednesday, the 37th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team continued its home dominance, remaining undefeated at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Despite some moments that looked to go either way, the Bulldogs stayed calm and collected, improving their home record to a perfect 3-0.
Fresno State started the night by sweeping the doubles matches. The top-ranked tandem of Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova defeated Ekaterina Kosminskaya and Emily Wolf, 8-3. No. 9 Tinesta Rowe and Melanie Gloria appear to be back in the same form that earned them a berth in the NCAA Championship match a season ago, earning an 8-0 victory over Maria Anisimova and Lauren Sadaka on the second court.
Laura Pola and Danon Beatty pulled out a tightly-contested 8-7 (11-9) match against Jacqueline Wong and Alexa Ely, to complete the sweep.
The Bulldogs clinched the match when Beatty, a senior, beat Jordyn Shaffer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 on court six.
"It was nice to clinch the victory for the team," Beatty said. "I haven't had too many of those on my record, because I have such good teammates and it seems like someone always beats me to the punch."
Pola, Petukhova and Kucerkova all prevailed in three-set matches to give the Bulldogs three consecutive shutouts on their home court.
"I think Penn played very well and I'm happy we were able to come away with a win," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "I hope we can have a good crowd tomorrow to support us against TCU."
The Bulldogs welcome No. 21 TCU to the Wathen Tennis Center Thursday at 5 p.m., for the second of four matches for the Bulldogs this week. On Saturday the Bulldogs host No. 59 Arizona at 10:30 a.m. and the following day No. 34 Sacramento State visits Wathen at 11 a.m.
