FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog Equestrian team won its second straight road match by beating Southern Methodist University 7-5 in Dallas, Texas on Saturday.
In an English-only event held at the Park Lane Center, Fresno State won seven of the 12 matches in combined Equitation on the Flat and Equitation over Fences.
The match was close and went to the final ride of the day, in which senior Cambria Kissell scored a 79 on a horse named Captain in Equitation over Fences to clinch the win for the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 8 in the most recent national coaches' poll.
Kissell has been a clutch rider during her brilliant career and has won six of her last nine matches.
The Dogs picked up two other wins in fences, as two other Bulldog stars, Katie Nenneker and Lisa Wells each earned victories. Wells and Nenneker have combined for 16 victories this season.
Despite tying for the highest scores in the event with 78s, neither Wells nor Kissell were selected as the MVP. That award went to SMU's Kristen Collins, who had a 77 in a winning ride over Fresno State's Casey Jo McDonald.
Fresno State earned four victories on the flat, led by Nicole Roworth and Tarynn Shada, each with strong scores over 80 points, the two highest scores of the event.
Roworth, in her first road event, posted an 85, the highest score of the day by any rider. She earned her second victory in three matches on the season.
Shada's score of 81 was her season-high as she won her fourth match of the year.
Also earning wins for the Bulldogs were Kimbery Hewson Budnik, her 10th of the season, and Caitlyn Marshall. Marshall has seven wins on the season.
Up next, the Dogs head to the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas April 16-19, 2009.
