FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State has always taken pride in being able to give back to the community making it no surprise that when the opportunity came for student-athletes to participate in the Read Across America event for kids, four Bulldogs jumped right on it.
The Read Across America event honoring the great Dr. Seuss' birthday, is now its 12th year giving kids across the country the opportunity to sit down and have a story read to them. This year the nationwide theme was Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat."
This year four Fresno State student-athletes went to Reagan Elementary School on Feb. 27 to read "The Cat in the Hat" to a total of 250 kindergarten through fifth-grade students.
Chris Carter of the Bulldog football team was thrilled to be a part of this event.
"I really enjoyed it," said Carter. "We had a great time, it was really cool to see how many true fans you have, and it's always great to give back to the community especially when it's for the kids."
Christy Platt, a teacher at Reagan Elementary School, was excited to get the opportunity to participate in the event.
"It's a national event and is a celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday," said Platt. "We carry on the tradition because we wants kids to see reading as something fun and enjoyable and if they can see people they look up to reading then they are more apt to reading themselves. We had over 58 volunteer readers all day and they kids loved it."
Madison Silver of the equestrian team was also excited to be able to take part in the reading activities.
"It was a really neat experience," said Silver. "It's important to start reading at an early age to help educate them and someone reading to them shows the importance of the matter."
