Doverspike in First at WAC Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State was set to tee off and had to deal with difficult winds during competition. Despite the weather, junior Grant Doverspike found a way to shoot a low round of 67 to share first place after round one at the 2009 Club Glove Men's WAC Championship in Henderson, Nev. Doverspike finished the day with six birdies to maintain the top position. Doverspike shares the top spot with New Mexico State's Travis Reid.
"Grant had a fantastic round today considering the conditions given," said Mike Watney. "He and the other guys found a way to play well enough for us to be in this position."
Fresno State (287) finished the day one under in second place just five strokes behind New Mexico State (282). Idaho (288) is in third in front of San Jose State (292). Utah State (293) is in fifth followed by Nevada (295), Louisiana Tech (296), Hawaii (306) and Boise State (306).
"We teed off about an hour and a half later than New Mexico State, so we got more wind then they did today." said Watney. "We feel fortunate to be only five strokes back. Tomorrow we will compete with them and it should be interesting."
Sophomore's Michael Gideon and Bryan Hogan finished the round in 18th place with a t1-over 73. Bhavik Patel is one stroke behind the sophomores to tie for 18th today. Todd Angel tied for 31st with a 76 during the first round.
Tee times for the `Dogs begin at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday for round two at the WAC Championship. For live scoring go to golfstat.com
