'Dogs in Second, Four Strokes Back

FRESNO, Calif.-Fresno State remains second place after the second round of the 2009 Club Glove WAC Men's Championships. The Bulldogs (587 /+11) are four strokes behind leader New Mexico State after posting the best score of the day with a 30. Nevada had the biggest improvement in team standings, jumping from sixth place to a tie for fourth with a second round total of 301.
The `Dogs followed up yesterday's 287 with a 300 in windy conditions on Tuesday at the 7,332-yard, par-72 Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
"Everyone's scores were so much higher today because of the wind," said Mike Watney. "I am pleased with our scores and that the guys hung in there with these conditions."
Grant Doverspike shot a 75 and is two strokes back in second place. Doverspike birdied two of his final three holes to maintain the second place spot. He leads the field in par three scoring with a 2.88 stroke average and with 11 birdies.
Both Bhavik Patel and Michael Gideon fired solid rounds of 73 and 74, respectively to share 11th place. Bryan Hogan concluded the day by tying for 19th while posting a 78. To round out the Bulldog lineup is Todd Angel shooting an 80 and tying for 27th.
"Mike and Bhavik had very solid scores also. I feel good about tomorrow," said Watney.
San Jose State's Mark Hubbard jumped eight spots and is now tied for third place with teammate Jay Myers at even par for the tournament. Two players shot under par in the second round as Utah State's Devin Daniels and New Mexico State's Gaston De La Torre each carded 71's and are tied for sixth place.
In the rest of the team standings, Idaho remains in third place (288-301--589) followed by Nevada (295-301--596) and Utah State (293-303--596) tied for fourth, San Jose State (292-306--598) in sixth, Louisiana Tech (296-317--613), Boise State (307-317--624) and Hawai'i (306-327--633).
The three-day tournament concludes on Wednesday with Fresno State's tee times beginning at 8:20 a.m.
