Freshmen and Transfer Swimmers and Divers Named Academic All-WAC

FRESNO, Calif. - Two Fresno State swimmers and one diver received notification of Academic All-WAC honors after the Western Athletic Conference announced the 2008-08 spring sports freshmen and transfer honorees.
Heidi Gjoen (Oslo, Norway), a freshman, Mary Tess Taylor (Granite Bay, Calif.) a junior and Kendra Weeks (Folsom, Calif.) a sophomore were named in Wednesday's announcement as athletes who have earned the Academic All-WAC honors.
Student-athletes are required to obtain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, compete in at least 50 percent of season contests and complete at least one academic year in order to earn All-WAC honors.
Gjoen, a business major, shattered a Fresno State record when she placed third in the 200 backstroke finals during the WAC Championships in February, surpassing a nearly nine-year-old school record and claiming a first-team All-WAC title with a time of 2:00.65.
Taylor, an art major, swam a high time during the WAC Championships in February. Swimming 1:06.76 in the heat c finals and moved up to 18th during the finals.
Weeks, a biology major, finished the 2008-09 season with a first place win over UCSC on the 3-meter, a second place finish on the 1-meter and second place finish on the 3-meter against rival San Jose State. Weeks concluded the season with a 16th place finish on the 1-meter board at the WAC Championships to earn Fresno State its first inaugural "point" at the conference championship.
