FRESNO, Calif. - Cecilia Agraz will be a freshman for head volleyball coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell this fall, but before joining the Bulldogs, the outside hitter from Hanford, Calif., will compete with her club team at the Junior Olympics in Miami, Fla., next week.
Agraz and the Central Cal club team qualified in the Open Division of the Junior Olympics by finishing third at the Colorado Crossroads.
The team leaves on Monday and the tournament runs from July 1-4 and features Open, American and National Divisions, with the Open being the highest level of competition.
The Open Division consists of four pools with seven teams each. The top teams from each pool will then go to the Gold Division Playoffs to compete for the title.
Each match will be the best out of five featuring the best 28 teams in the country that have qualified.
"I'm ready to play against some tough competition," Agraz said. "I can't wait to play with my teammates, have a lot of fun and make it a memorable tournament before I go to college."
This is the third time that Agraz will compete in the Junior Olympics, but the first in the Open Division in her first year with Central Cal.
It will be Agrazs' first time in Miami. The team has been practicing at 6 a.m. to prepare for the Florida time change.
Agraz signed a National Letter of Intent last fall and since has been named a Second Team Under Armour High School All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Nov. 19, 2008.
