GPA's Improve in Spring 2009

FRESNO, Calif. - The 2008-09 year was not only an excellent year for the Bulldogs in the field of competition but it was also an even better year for student-athletes in the classroom as nine teams had GPA's of 3.0 or better in the fall and spring semesters.
The nine teams with the 3.0 or better GPA is the best the department has done in the classroom in the last five years. As a department, the combined GPA was 2.92 for the spring semester and 2.95 for the 2008 fall semester. Both marks were the best in five years too.
After an impressive fall semester where the women's golf team had a GPA of 3.04, the team upped its spring semester GPA to a department-best 3.54.
"It has been a goal of ours to have the highest team GPA," Fresno State women's golf coach Angie Cates-Moore said. "We are very proud of our accomplishment. The team works hard in all areas of being a student athlete and I'm so proud of them!"
The women's tennis team had a 3.45 GPA while the men's tennis team boasted a 3.43 average in the classroom for the spring semester.
Women's basketball boasted a 3.32 spring semester GPA while women's lacrosse had a 3.28 average. Also finishing above a 3.0 was women's track and field and cross country (3.06), women's volleyball (3.05), women's soccer (3.02) and swimming and diving (3.45).
Several other Bulldog teams improved their GPA from the spring 2008 semester to the spring 2009 semester. The men's basketball team improved their average from 2.50 to 2.86 this spring while the men's tennis team went from a 3.07 GPA to a 3.43 average. The women's basketball team had a 2.76 GPA in the spring of 2008 and improved that mark to a 3.32 this spring.
Other GPA improvements were by the women's volleyball team (2.92 to 3.05), women's track and field (3.01 to 3.06), women's softball (2.79 to 2.87) and equestrian (2.84 to 2.98).
