Platt Posts Season-High 21 Kills

RENO, Nev. - In the opening Western Athletic Conference match of the 2009 season, the `Dogs fell 3-1 in Reno, Nev., to the Wolf Pack. The `Dogs are now 7-6 (0-1 WAC) while Nevada is 4-9 (1-0 WAC). Set scores of the match were 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24.
The `Dogs went out hot early with a 4-1 lead off of a kill by sophomore Brianna Clarke.
Nevada tied the set at 4, but the `Dogs went up by as many as four early (12-8) and forced Nevada to take a timeout.
Back-to-back Bulldog blocks, a Nevada error and a Lauren Berger kill put the `Dogs up 18-11, giving Fresno State its largest margin of the set.
Nevada tied the set at 20, but a Wolf Pack service error gave the `Dogs a much-needed side out.
Again with the set tied at 21, a kill by Cecilia Agraz gave the `Dogs the 22-21 lead.
A kill by Marissa Brand put the `Dogs up two, 23-21.
Nevada rallied to get set point at 24-23 and a kill would give the Wolf Pack the first set 25-23.
Clarke led the `Dogs with four kills in the set.
With Allanah Munson serving, the `Dogs took an early 4-0 lead in set two.
The `Dogs went up 6-1, and while Nevada cut into the lead to get to 7-5, the `Dogs held off the Wolf Pack and maintained a three point lead through the early part of the set.
A service ace by Nevada tied the set at 15 but kills by Lisa Gera, Kelly Leonardo and a service ace by Lacey Gera, put the `Dogs back up three (18-15) and forced a Nevada timeout.
The `Dogs went up four (20-16), but back-to-back Nevada points forced a Fresno State timeout.
Nevada got within one twice, but the `Dogs got kills from Baylee Platt and Lacey Gera to take a 23-20 lead.
A Nevada error gave the `Dogs their first set point (24-20). Fresno State converted on its second set point with a kill by Clarke for a 25-21 victory to tie the match at 1-1.
Platt had five kills in set two and the `Dogs hit a match-high .333.
Nevada took an early 7-2 lead in set three but the `Dogs fought back within two (11-9) and forced a Nevada timeout.
Back-to-back kills by Clarke tied the set at 11 and the `Dogs went up 14-11 and took a lead by as many as four.
The Wolf Pack once again tied the set at 18 and following a timeout, took a 23-18 lead. On the first Nevada set point, 24-19, a kill by Leonardo kept the `Dogs alive and back-to-back kills by Platt got the `Dogs within two (24-22).
A kill by Nevada however, would give the Wolf Pack set three, 25-23 as they would take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Platt had 11 kills in set three alone.
Set four was a one-point set or tied until a block by Clarke and Platt and a Platt kill gave the `Dogs a 13-10 lead.
Nevada tied the set at 14 with a block but the `Dogs fought back to tie the set at 15.
Back-to-back Nevada errors and Leonardo blocks put the `Dogs up 20-16.
The `Dogs were up 23-22, but a Bulldog error tied the set at 23.
On the first match point for Nevada, a kill by Leonardo tie the set at 24.
Nevada however, got a kill to win the set (26-24) and the match.
Platt had a season-high 21 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Leonardo added 11 kills while Clarke had 10, respectively. Munson also posted a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs. Kelly Mason added 19 digs.
Fighting Spirit
Tonight's `Fighting Spirit' winners were Kelly Leonardo and Kelly Mason.
The `Dogs continue WAC road play as they head to Boise State on Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m. and Idaho on Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m.
