FRESNO, Calif. - Neither rain, nor hail nor mud could stop the Bulldogs from hosting their equestrian meet on Saturday. Fresno State easily defeated UC Davis 20-1 in its first match in more than two months.
After heavy rains and hail peppered the Valley all week, the event was held under sunny skies and warm conditions.
Even through the arena was wet and muddy, the Fresno State facilities and events crew led by Jason Holtz, Alex Cordova and Nate Wills, worked tirelessly all week to get the facility ready. They pumped hundreds of gallons of water from the arena and groomed it to prepare for the event.
It has been several years since the two schools competed against one another since the Bulldogs stopped participating in the IHSA circuit in favor of varsity intercollegiate competition. Both schools were highly-competitive in the western IHSA region but Saturday's event showed how far the Bulldog program has grown.
Since moving up, the Bulldog program progressed and currently is ranked No. 10 in the most recent national coaches' poll.
Fresno State's head coach, Dr. Becky Malmo, was pleased with her team's performance and the number of high scores on all of the events. The Dogs easily outdistanced their Aggie opponents in a majority of the rides.
The Dogs dominated in equitation over fences, winning five with three riders posting scores of 82 or better.
Freshman Chelsea Stone won MVP honors with a score of 82, the first time in her career she's scored higher than an 80. Lisa Wells had one of her best scores of the season with an 86 and Jennifer Jory posted an 83. Jessica Kissell also won her match with a score of 75.
The Dogs swept reining with five wins. Sophomore Shawna McClurg was awarded the MVP with a score of 67, her third victory of the season. Jill Tebbe posted the highest score of the day with a 74 as she won her fourth match of the season. It was her highest scoring ride this season.
Freshman Sydney Coletti, who celebrated her birthday on Saturday, won the first match in her career with a 72.5. Kaitlyn Coyes scored a 65 winning her first match of the season.
Newcomer Lisa Beach was selected the MVP in Equitation on the Flat as the Dogs won all six matches over the Aggies. Beach won her first match as a Bulldog with a score of 63, her second-highest of the season.
Helping the Dogs earn the sweep were wins by Emily McNeil, Caitlin Marshall, Lanie Madrazo, Lauren Carr and Sydney Grau. Madrazo won her second straight match this season. The flat group defeated South Carolina 3-2 in its previous match last November.
The Dogs wrapped up the day winning four of five matches in Western Horsemanship, which featured an MVP performance from freshman Christa Beezley, who had a score of 70.5. It was Beezley's third win of the season and second MVP award.
Allison Warkentin had a strong score of 74.5, her highest score of the season. Sammie Jo Stone and Madison Silver also won their matches with scores higher than 70. They are leading the team with four wins each on the season.
Up next, the Dogs host Stanford on Feb. 6 at the Student Horse Center.
