Bulldogs Ready to Make Run in Experienced and Talented WAC
Cleveland and the Bulldogs know that conference play is the most important time of the year. Fresno State bolted out to 3-0 conference start with wins over Boise State (71-68), Hawai'i (78-64) and San Jose State (80-70). The `Dogs then fell to the league's top three teams (Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State and Utah State), but rebounded to take down Nevada behind a breakout night by freshman Greg Smith and sophomore Brandon Sperling. The WAC returned eight of 10 2008-09 All-WAC honorees, including the Bulldogs' forward Sylvester Seay, for this season. The top eight teams qualify for the 2010 WAC Tournament.
Shepp Starring in Rookie Campaign
Sophomore point guard Steven Shepp is showing his visionary style for running the Bulldog offense. As a transfer from Allegany College of Maryland, Shepp spent the first month of the season sparking the team from the bench before earning his starting role. His passionate approach to the game and pass-first philosophy led to a career-high 10 assists versus SJSU (Jan. 11). He also presents a deep threat to score from anywhere on the hardwood.
LAST WEEK: Smith Powers 87-77 Win Over Pack, `Dogs Back in 4th
Fresno State improved to 4-3 in WAC play with an 87-77 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack behind a powerful performance by freshman Greg Smith, who recorded his fourth career double-double on career-highs in scoring (25), rebounding (11) and assists (5). Earlier in the week, Fresno State fell to Utah State after losing Paul George, the Bulldogs' leader in scoring, rebounding and steals, to injury. The `Dogs are now tied for fourth-place with Nevada and San Jose State in conference play through the first seven WAC contests.
Seay Surpasses 1,000 Career Points, Soaring Past Scoring Leaders
Senior Sylvester Seay (San Bernardino, Calif./Arizona State) combined his 161 points as a Sun Devil and his first 839 points as a Bulldog to reach the 1,000 point milestone. Seay upped his total to 851 points in a Bulldog uniform in just 55 games played and entered the week ranked 44th highest scorer in program history. On the season, Seay is averaging 16 points/game as a dual threat from the post and beyond the 3-point arc. This is the second consecutvie season that Fresno State fields a lone senior on a young, yet talented roster.
