Petukhova Remains Hot to Start Spring

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 15 Fresno State met with No. 26 Virginia for the consolation bracket of the qualifying rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, with the Cavaliers picking up a 5-2 victory at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Bulldog senior and fourth-ranked Anastasia Petukhova continued her tear against ranked opponents. No. 72 Lindsey Hardenbergh challenged Petukhova today, but the senior from Moscow, Russia, got stronger as the match progress and came away with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Renata Kucerkova was also sharp for the Bulldogs, as she picked up a 6-2, 6-1 straight-sets win over Jennifer Stevens.
They also performed well together as a doubles combination, en route to an 8-3 victory over Jennifer Stevens and Emily Frasier.
The dual also provided valuable competitive experience for a developing Bulldog unit.
"We were very competitive today and showed a lot more fighting spirit," Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We were in a position to win some matches. This is a step in the right direction. If we continue improving, we are going to surprise some teams and win some matches."
The Bulldogs will next be in action on Friday, when they welcome Saint Mary's to the Wathen Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
