'Dogs Win First Match On The Road

FRESNO, Calif. - The women's equestrian team traveled to Auburn, Alabama to compete in two head to head competitions this weekend. The `Dogs defeated the Delaware State Hornets 14-4 and earned MVP honors in each event of competition.
"The ladies came out and rode very strong today," said Western head coach Stephanie Reeves. "We are very proud of all of them."
The English team finished the day with nine wins and one tie. The `Dogs swept the Equitation over Fences competition earning all five wins and Junior Jessica Kissell was awarded MVP with a score of 79.
"Jessica had a beautiful ride on a very tough horse," English head coach Julia Scrivanni commented on the winning ride. "I was also very impressed with Holly's ride and her great score of 86."
Sophomore Chelsie Stone and Junior Kimberly Hewson Budnik also picked up wins in the Equitation over Fences competition. Freshman Dayle Fischer was the only English rookie on the road and she defeated her opponent with a score of 74.
"Dayle rode very well today in her first collegiate competition," said Scrivanni. "She represented the team very well. She drew a tough horse and did a great job."
The Bulldogs earned four wins and one tie on the Equitation on the Flat. Sophomore standout Lauren Carr picked up the MVP honors with a score of 80. Senior Caitlin Marshall, junior Kimberly Steinbuch, and junior Nicole Roworth also earned wins in the flat arena.
The Western team finished the day with five wins, four losses, and one tie. Sophomore Sydney Coletti achieved her second MVP honor of the season in the reining competition. Senior Jillian Tebbe and Freshman Sonya Koch also won their points today.
Sophomore Christa Beezley shined in the Horsemanship competition and received MVP honors with a score of 72.5. Senior Madison Silver also picked up a win in this event to help bring the `Dogs to their victory.
"The freshman jumped right into the competition today," said Reeves. "All of the ladies exceeded our expectations in the arena and we are ready to take on Auburn tomorrow."
"Today was a great start to the weekend," added Scrivani. "Auburn is the defending champion from last season, but we are very excited for tomorrow and ready to have another great day."
