FRESNO, Calif. - Led by two Bulldogs in the top five of the individual standings, the Fresno State men's golf team moved up one spot to finish in third place at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational played at the Brookside Country Club in Stockton, Calif.
Fresno State posted a 3-under par round on the final day and finished with a three-day total of 4-under par over 54 holes. Pacific blew away the field on its home course at 25-under par. The Bulldogs were two strokes behind Oregon State (-6) in the 12-team field that included teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, WAC and Big 12 among others.
"This was our best tournament of the fall no doubt," said Hall of Fame Coach Mike Watney. "We played our most consistent and solid tournament and have a lot of good things we can work on over the next three months. Bryan Sunker played a great tournament. With rounds of 65 and 68 to finish the tournament is great for him. He's a hard worker and deserves some success."
Junior Bhavik Patel shot three straight rounds under par (69-68-68--205) to finish at 8-under par and in fourth place. He made 14 birdies during the tournament.
Sunker (73-65-68--206) was 9-under par over his final two rounds combined with 11 birdies and finished in fifth place at 7-under par. He made six birdies without a bogey in Tuesday's round.
Freshman Nate Jessup made five birdies and shot a 1-under par 70 on the final day and moved up from 25th to a tie for 16th in the tournament. Seniors Bryan Hogan and Michael Gideon tied for 48th and 55th, respectively.
"We are Your Team!" The Bulldogs are off until January 31, 2011 when they compete at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the famous Tucson National Golf Course.
