Next Up, Bulldogs Host Rival Spartans

FRESNO, Calif. - Up next the Fresno State swimming and diving team looks to avenge a decisive early season defeat in which the Bulldogs fell to the Spartans 176-66 on the opening day of the WAC Shootout. Since the last meeting between the two teams, the `Dogs have impressively improved their times in nearly every event and look to give San Jose state a run for their money this time around in what will be the last regular season dual meet before both teams head to the conference meets in San Antonio, Texas. The Bulldogs are undefeated at home this season with victories coming against Pacific and Cal State Bakersfield and look to continue to protect their home pool and end the regular season 3-0 in front of the "red wave" this Saturday.
Scouting the Spartans
The Spartans have had very strong performances all season giving every team they have come up against all that they could handle and carry an impressive record of 11-3 coming into this weekend's dual meet at Clovis North Aquatic Center. They rank amongst the top times in the WAC in multiple events and will be an all around challenging test for the Bulldogs. San Jose State looks to be a team that will be in contention for the 2009-10 WAC Championship but will without a doubt have their hands full with Fresno State on Senior night.
Seniors Bulldogs to be Honored Saturday
This Saturday, during pre-meet festivities, three senior Bulldogs will be honored for there years of contribution and hard work that have helped pave the way to a future undoubtably full of success for a young Fresno State swimming and diving program.
Senior breaststroker Mary Tess Taylor and distance specialist Rebecca Strmiska along with diver Blair Hopkins will compete in the last regular season dual-meet of their college careers this weekend against conference rivals San Jose State and look to go out undefeated at home. All three seniors have established themselves as leaders in a program that is made up of 15 underclassmen including nine freshman.
Gjoen Tops charts in 100 and 200 Backstroke Evets at the Beach Cup
Sophomore Heidi Gjoen continued her dominating ways as she swept the backstroke events at the Beach Cup bringing home first place for the Bulldogs in both the 100 and 200 events in decisive fashion. Gjoen got back in the pool and continued her winning ways as she was the fastest leg in the winning 400 medley relay team.
Gjoen nearly capped off the weekend with a perfect performance as she placed second out of 21 swimmers in the 200 I.M. event which she has performed well in all year for the `Dogs and looks to score valuable points in the conference meets.
