FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State freshman diver Stacey Luke made school history on Thursday afternoon as she became the first diver since the return of the program to earn the opportunity to compete in the 2010 NCAA diving zones at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas.
Luke finished 40th overall in Zone E competition where she recorded a 1-meter score of 195.40.
"I think it was a great opportunity for Stacey to see what she needs to do to compete against the best in the country," said head coach Taryn Patrick. "We don't get the opportunity to compete against PAC-10 and Mountain West opponents that often and after today, Stacey has an idea of what she needs to do to compete with the top divers next year."
Patrick and Luke were forced to overcome lengthy travel delays due to severe thunderstorms in the Dallas area which caused them to have to circle the runway for a couple of hours before eventually having to land in Oklahoma City and wait out the storm. The delays caused them to miss their flight into Austin making for a long grueling day of travel and no opportunity to get a practice session in.
"The flight without a doubt had a toll on us," said Patrick. "But Stacey did her best to overcome it and learned a lot that will prove to be useful next season."
The Diving Zones marks the end of a season full of improvements for the Bulldog swimming and diving team, which finished eighth overall at the conference meet and showed promising signs of great things to come in the future.
