FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State took on No. 21 USC on Wednesday in Los Angeles, with the Trojans picking up a 6-1 victory.
Bulldog freshman Julia Gragera-Cano defeated the Trojans' Lyndsay Kinstler. Gragera-Cano won the first set 6-3 and was ahead 3-0 in the second when Kinstler retired from the match.
"It was really big for Julia as she beat a strong opponent," Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She played some of her best tennis since coming to Fresno State."
The Bulldogs as a whole were also competitive in doubles.
Laura Pola and Renata Kucerkova pushed USC's No. 56 Valeria Pulido and Maria Sanchez and the Trojan duo came away with an 8-6 victory. Gragera-Cano and Mikhailova were also narrowly edged by Sarah Fansler and Kinstler, by the score of 8-6.
"I saw progress in our doubles today," Thibodeau said. "USC has a great team and we shined on some occasions, but fell just short."
The `Dogs now head back to the friendly confines of the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center to host a doubleheader on Saturday against Harvard and Pacific.
