FRESNO, Calif. - If you would have asked head coach Angie Cates-Moore a month ago if she would be pleased with a Top 10 finish in the always tough Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, she likely would have said yes.
To show how much this team has grown since, the Dogs placed eighth in the field and had several chances to finish even higher.
"There's no doubt we are playing better and we are getting very close to be able to put together a really good tournament for all three rounds," said Cates-Moore following the event. "While we are disappointed we slipped some in the tournament and didn't play that well coming in, I am overall very pleased with the outcome. It's good to be disappointed because we know what could have been and we will work harder to prepare for the Hawaii tournament. It was a great experience to play well in such a tough tournament and in some tough weather conditions. We just keep building and getting better each week."
The Dogs were fourth after the second round of the tournament, but still finished ahead of some good programs like Long Beach State, Oklahoma and Colorado. The Dogs were well ahead of WAC foes Hawaii and Nevada, beating each my more than 20 strokes. No. 14 Cal won the event at 35-over par. The Dogs finished five strokes behind No. 22 Oklahoma State for fifth place.
Sophomore sensation Louisa Lies (73-71-79--223) placed sixth in the field, her best finish of the season. Hali Coppin (75-79-80--234) tied for 38th place, while Lindi Covarrubias (77-81-78--236) tied for 48th place.
Chelsea Czinksi (82-77-80--239) and Maria Pia Escandon (75-77-87--239) tied for 57th place.
The Dogs hit the road next week, heading to Hawaii for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
"We have high expectations for next week," said Cates-Moore. "We were glad to have one of our players in contention to win this week and we want to the mindset that they all can do that next week."
