`Dogs Sweep Aggies, Advance to WAC Semifinals

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State advanced to the semifinals of the WAC Tennis Championships behind key contributions from underclassmen, in a 4-0 sweep of the sixth-seeded New Mexico State Aggies on Friday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Bulldog freshmen Bianca Modoc and Julia Gragera-Cano and sophomore Laura Pola each picked up singles wins in a winning effort for the Bulldogs.
Modoc defeated Ginet Pinero in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
After taking the first set in convincing 6-1 fashion, Gragera-Cano edged Natalia Salum, 7-5, in the second set.
Pola put together two solid sets against Isabela Kalaif, to come away with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The Bulldogs also won the doubles point. Renata Kucerkova and Pola defeated Aleksa Costa and Kalaif, 8-1, and Gragera-Cano and Anastasia Petukhova beat Pinero and Salum, 8-4.
"It was a good start and we played well enough to win," Fresno State head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "We took control on all six courts. We will continue to play with enthusiasm and compete even harder."
The `Dogs will take on second-seeded Nevada in the semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center. The winner of the match between the Bulldogs and the Wolf Pack will advance to the WAC Championship match for a chance for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
