FRESNO, Calif. -
2010 Outdoor Track & Field Championships
The Bulldog track and field team travels to Ruston, La., for the WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week. The four-day meet will take place at the new Jim Mize Track and Field Complex on the campus of Louisiana Tech, May 12-15. Decathletes will take the field first, opening the meet with the two-day decathlon on Wednesday, May 12 beginning at 11 a.m. PT. The singular events will begin Friday, May 14. Field events will begin at 10:30 a.m. PT and running events begin at 1 p.m. PT. Last season the men finished fourth in the conference championships, winning individual titles in the 1,500-meter and the 4x400 relay.
Looking to the NCAA
The NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, May 28-29, will be the first round of postseason competition. In order to qualify for the Regional, competitors must have one of the 48 best marks in the West Region according to the descending order list. Currently, seven Bulldogs have qualifying marks with conference championships still to come. Last season, Fresno State posted 24 season- and career-best marks at the WAC Outdoor Championships, leaving ample room for more Bulldogs to qualify for the NCAA Regional.
Sanders - Stepping It Up
Frank Sanders is on course to win his third-straight WAC crown in the 1,500-meter race. After taking hold of the conference's top time in the event early in the season, Sanders has not only maintained the No. 1 spot, he has improved on his mark throughout the season. At the Brutus Hamilton, the senior competed in the 1-mile invitational, taking fourth with a time of 4:02.38. The time converts to 3:44.43, a new career-best for Sanders. The mark puts him in the No. 29 spot in the West Region standings.
Javelin for Jacqueline
Jacqueline Vazquez seems most comfortable throwing at home. For the last two years, Vazquez has set new career-best marks at the Fresno State home meet on the first Saturday of May at Warmerdam Field. At the Fresno State Last Chance Meet on May 1, Vazquez threw a career-best 148-5 (45.24m) to move to No. 37 on the descending order list (a jump of 15 spots) and is currently on track to qualify for her first NCAA Regional.
