Watney Honors Bulldog Golfers

FRESNO, Calif. - Just before heading off to the NCAA Championships next week in Washington, head coach Mike Watney handed out awards to the 2009-10 men's golf team Thursday afternoon at Sunnyside Country Club.
Watney's team will compete against 12 other teams in NCAA regional championships in Bremerton, Wash., May 20-22. If the Dogs finish in the Top 5 of the tournament, they would advance to the NCAA Finals in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sophomore Bhavik Patel was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the year. He won the University of San Diego Tournament and placed second in two others. He's on pace to have the third-best season scoring average in school history at 71.43. His award was an original portrait from noted golf artist and golf course architect Bob Putman,who's been creating the Bulldog golf MVP award for years.
Watney thanked the Par Busters booster club for their support and presented an autographed photo of former Bulldog great Nick Watney to Putnam in appreciation of his support of the Bulldog golf program.
Senior Todd Angel was selected as team captain and got his graduation award, a beautiful diploma frame from Watney.

The Dogs will play with Eastern Michigan and Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA regional beginning at 9:10 a.m. PT on May 20. All regional sites will play 54-hole tournaments, 18 holes per day.
