FRESNO, Calif. - After a par performance in the first round of the 2010 WAC championship tournament, the Fresno State men's golf team is in solid position to contend for the league title.
The Bulldogs have three players in the Top 15 and shot an even par round of 288 at the Rio Secca Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. This is the second straight year the tournament has been held at the course. The Dogs are seven shots off the lead and in fourth place.
Sophomore Bhavik Patel is tied for ninth place after a 71 in the opening around. He was 2-under par after making four birdies through 15 holes, but bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 and made a birdie on 18. He entered the tournament with the best scoring average in the WAC and is seven shots off the lead.
Senior Grant Doverspike, who's never finished lower than second in a WAC tournament, shot even an even-par round of 72 and is tied for 13th place. Doverspike, the 2009 WAC Player of the Year, won the WAC medal as a freshman and placed second each of the last two seasons. He was 4-under in last year's event.
Like Patel, Doverspike struggled down the stretch with a double-bogey on the 18th hole. He made five birdies on the day.
Tied with Doverspike is Bryan Hogan, who was steady and made two birdies in his last five holes to finish even par.
Nevada leads the tournament after the first round with two-time defending team champion New Mexico State in second just five shots ahead of the Dogs.
Timothy Madigan of NMSU shot an incredible round of 8-under par and leads the tournament with a 64. He tied the Rio Secca course record held by Tiger Woods and Nick Watney among others. Madigan made 10 birdies and leads the field by three strokes.
Michael Gideon shot a 73 in the opening round with two birdies and steady sophomore Brian Sunker, playing in his second straight tournament, is 2-over par with a 74. He made 14 pars on his round and is tied for 22nd place.
The WAC tournament continues at 7:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday at the Rio Secca Golf Club.
