FRESNO, Calif. - With its strong commitment to premier athletic competition and academic performance, Fresno State finished second in the 2009-10 Western Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup standings and remained the best program throughout the eight years of the award.
The Bulldogs were powered by three conference team titles (baseball, women's basketball and men's tennis) and four other squads (men's cross country, football, softball and women's tennis) securing a spot in the top three in their respective standings.
The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport and are averaged between a team's regular season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. Ties are not broken but instead are averaged between the tied teams.
This is the eighth year of the WAC Commissioner's Cup and the 'Dogs have finished in the top half of the standings in all eight seasons. Since the 2002-03 academic year when the Cup race started, Fresno State has scored a WAC-best 679.5 points for an average of 84.94 points per academic year. The `Dogs rank first among the current WAC institutions with an average finish of 2.375, ahead of Boise State (3.63) and Nevada (3.88) as the top three WAC schools.
Fresno State is also one of two repeat Cup winners (2007-08 and 2008-09), along with Rice University (2003-04 and 2004-05).
