FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team is hosting their second annual Junior Bulldog Volleyball camp this week.
"This summer we wanted to invest time into our Central Valley's youth by running Junior Bulldog Volleyball Camps," said Head Coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell. "We are trying to prepare them for club and high-school volleyball through efficient and technically sound training. If they are new to the sport they will learn the most important basics so they can start competing and enjoy the sport at a young age."
The camp is divided into two sessions. The Junior Bulldog Skills Session is held in the mornings from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.
The second session, the Junior Bulldog Competition Session is held from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and also runs all week. Both sessions are including students entering grades 1-8. This high-energy camp is for the young, aspiring leaders and competitors. Games will inspire competitiveness, leadership, problem-solving and fun reaction drills.
Senior Bulldog libero Kelly Mason was one of two current players to assist in running and instructing the morning camp.
"So far during this camp the kids are really enjoying their time. There is a lot of enthusiasm and involvement and they are excited to learn. Most of the Junior Bulldogs especially enjoy the competition time," she said.
The morning session focuses on skill enhancement, control, efficiency, and power in the areas of serving, passing, setting, defending, and attacking.
"I really want the kids to keep developing all their volleyball skills so that they can go back to their teams or their schools and be more competitive players because they better understand the sport of volleyball," Mason added.
Defensive specialist, Meghan Moss is enjoying her camp experience, "The camp has grown since last summer's sessions, which is exciting. We have over 30 kids in the Junior Bulldog Session and this is a great way to promote our program and impact some of the Valley's youth."
The Fresno State Volleyball team will begin their own training camp the beginning of August.
"I am looking forward to camp and getting back in North gym with our coaches," Moss commented. "We have been playing a lot this summer, mainly outdoors, and it's going to be great to be back at it working with the coaches, learning and becoming the best volleyball players we can be before the 2010 volleyball season."
"We Are Your Team!"The 2010 volleyball season is right around the corner. The Bulldog's open their pre-season play at home with the Fresno State Classic August 27 and 28. The teams joining the tournament will be AVCA nationally ranked No. 18 University of Oregon, Santa Clara, and UC Riverside. Be at the Savemart Center as they begin their 2010 season.
