FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs dug themselves a hole in the first round of the Kikkor Golf Husky Classic with a high round of 312 and after a strong second round are in 13th place with 18-holes remaining for the final round at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.
Two Bulldogs battled tough weather conditions and are in the Top 15 of a very tough field that includes six teams ranked in the Top 35, led by No. 1 Oregon, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 5 Washington.
Junior Bhavik Patel (77-66--143) is tied for 8th place and Bryan Hogan (73-71--144) is one shot back tied for 14th. Patel's round of 66 was the lowest on the tournament. He started his second round with an eagle and added six birdies on the round. Hogan was solid all day with six birdies and no score worse than a bogey.
No. 34 Pepperdine holds a 10-shot lead on the field after shooting 10-under par. Washington (-2) was the only other school under par during the tournament.
The Dogs shot a 3-under par score of 285 in the second round, the fourth best team score for that round. Brian Sunker (82-70--152) made five birdies and three bogeys in the round. He's tied for 52nd place. Rounding out the score for the Dogs were Tim Toste (80-78--158) and Michael Gideon (85-80--165).
"Today was a day where some guys played very good and other guys struggled mightily," said Hall of Fame Coach Mike Watney. "This course is tough and it was raining and windy off and on. A slip here and there resulted in doubles and triples. The first round was a nightmare. Three of the guys gritted their teeth and fought back nicely in the second round. Bhavik's 66 was fantastic and was the best round of the day. Bryan Hogan played steady and Brian Sunker came back with a good second round. The Bulldogs usually rely on consistency but that didn't happen on Monday. We had to count a 78, an 80, and an 82. That is almost impossible to overcome in a tough field like this. I'm glad we have another day."
"We are Your Team" The Bulldog men's golf team concludes the final day of the Kikkor Golf Husky Classic on Tuesday with 18 holes at the Washington National Course near Seattle. Follow the tournament results on www.golfstat.com.
