FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs shined in the Fresno fog today as they rode to victory against Miami of Ohio and Ohio State. The English team competed against Miami of Ohio and ended the day with a 9-3 win and the Western team finished with a 7-2 victory over Ohio State.
"I am incredibly happy with all of the ladies," said Western coach Stephanie Reeves. "They all stepped up and had really great rides today."
The English team started their first competition of the spring semester with a 4-2 win in the Equitation Over Fences. Senior Holly Elsbernd led the Dogs in this event with her high score of an 82. Other Bulldogs who jumped for wins were Hillary West, Kimberly Hewson Budnik, and Dayle Fischer.
"Hillary really went out there and got it done today," said English coach Julia Scrivanni. "She has great confidence and she definitely found her spot in the arena today."
The Equitation on the Flat was even better when the English team defeated Miami of Ohio with a 5-1 win. Junior Nicole Roworth and sophomore Lanie Madrazo received outstanding scores of 90 with sophomore Lauren Carr only one point behind them with a score of 89. Madrazo was chosen to be the MVP for the event.
"I am very happy with Lanie," said Scrivanni. "She showed off what she has been working on in practice and I am very proud of her."
The Western competition was just as exciting today at The Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs defeated Ohio State in the Horsemanship 5-1. Senior Madison Silver and freshman Shauna Woodward earned high scores of 74 with sophomore Christa Beezley only one point behind them with a respected score of 73.
"I was ecstatic with the high scores in the Horsemanship," said Reeves. "I knew the ladies had it in them and it was incredible to see their rides receive those scores."
The Dogs slid back into the arena for the fourth and final event of the day where they defeated Ohio State 2-1 in the reining. Junior Shawna McClurg and sophomore Sydney Colleti both earned wins in this event.
"This was a great spring opener for us," said Scrivanni. "I am excited for all of the home shows we have this spring because it is a great opportunity for our young team to gain confidence. All of the ladies are exceptional riders and I am excited to take this talent on the road with us for our Texas trip."
The Bulldogs will spend the next couple of weeks gearing up for their triple competition road trip to Texas where they will take on three schools in three days.
