FRESNO, Calif. - Former student-athlete and Fresno State graduate, Yvette Roberts, was awarded the 2011 "Top Dog Alumni Award," presented by the Fresno State Alumni Association on Thursday night at the Save Mart Center.
Roberts is a community resource specialist for Fresno County Social Services and the 1989 Bulldog Female Athlete of the Year. Roberts, a women's basketball standout, was Fresno State's all-time leading scorer for 22 years with 1,778 points. The record was broken just last season by Jaleesa Ross.
The 2011 Outstanding Alumna Award is presented from the Department of Athletics and is recognized by Fresno State for outstanding accomplishments in their field as examples of exceptional achievement. This award is the highest honor given by the Fresno State Alumni Association and the University. The Alumni Association works in conjunction with the deans of Fresno State's eight schools, as well as the dean of student affairs and the director of athletics to identify and select candidates for the awards.
"I am totally shocked. I most definitely want to thank those who voted for me and I am humbly honored by this award," Roberts said. "I played basketball for the love of the sport, not for the recognition. For this to come about is truly a blessing and I am very, very grateful."
Roberts will also be recognized during the Homecoming football game this Saturday, Oct. 15 at halftime, along with the other honorees. Joining them will be university president John D. Welty and Fresno State Alumni Association President Brad Fisher.
"The Fresno State athletic program has been growing and bringing so much positivity and you can be nothing but proud because they give us something that we love," Roberts said. "I wish the program the best of luck and that it continues to get stronger as time goes on."
