FRESNO, Calif. -
The Fresno State men's and women's tennis team's travel to opposite ends of California this week to compete in the ITA Regional tournaments.
Men's head coach Jay Udwadia and his nine-player team begins tournament play in sunny southern California on Thursday at the host school Pepperdine in Malibu for the men's tennis ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
Women's head coach Simon Thibodeau and the team head to Stanford to compete in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships starting Friday.
Thibodeau is confident of his team going into the tournament.
"We are playing in the nation's toughest region, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get good individual wins in both singles and doubles," Thibodeau said.
Both the men's and women's teams took the WAC title in May last spring, and have competed well in the fall tournaments.
In early October, senior Remi Boutillier advanced to the Quarterfinals at the All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla. for the men's team, while sophomore Marianne Jodoin proceeded into the next round of singles play at the All-American tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. for the women's team.
For the men's team, sophomore Francis Alcantara also proves a worthy opponent after sweeping the singles bracket in Fresno State's annual Bulldog Classic.
Boutillier and Alcantara are teaming up and are seeded No. 6 for doubles play at the Southwest Regionals. The duo begins championship play on Friday, Oct. 21.
