`Dogs Win SMU Tournament

DALLAS - The Fresno State women's basketball team defeated Southern Methodist 88-67 on Saturday night and won the 2011 Hoops for the Cure Tournament. The Bulldogs were 2-0 in the tournament and improve to 4-2 on the season.
The `Dogs have appeared in the tournament three times and it is the first time the `Dogs have won the tournament.
Fresno State's victory over host SMU was again led sophomore Ki-Ki Moore, who tied her career-high performance of 28 points. Moore added five assists and three steals against the Mustangs. Moore ended the game with back-to-back jumpers to seal the win.
Senior Blakely Goldberg also had a big night for Fresno State adding 19 points. She had a team-high seven rebounds and tallied three assists. Junior Rosie Moult was the third of five Bulldogs to score in double figures. She had 11 points, a team-high four steals and seven rebounds. Madison Parrish and Veronica Wilson both had 10 points each.
Fresno State opened the second half with three unanswered points. SMU stopped the `Dogs momentum and got a second half surge. The Mustangs went on an 8-0 run cutting Fresno State's lead to 17. The Bulldogs regrouped and the momentum switched as the `Dogs went on an 9-2 run to put them up again by 20 points.
Late in the game, the Mustangs attempted to chip away at the Bulldogs lead and came within 12. Moore shut down SMU and scored five points in the final seconds of the game and the `Dogs won by 21.
In the first half, Goldberg made a layup that gave the `Dogs their first lead of the game. The senior then hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the court to spark a 7-0 run and put Fresno State ahead by four. The Bulldogs took the lead with 17:12 on the clock and never looked back in the first half.
Goldberg drained another 3-pointer from well beyond the arc to put the `Dogs up by 12 points with 3:45 left in the half. The Bulldogs lead continued to increase and Fresno State led by as many as 19 in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Goldberg, along with Moore and Moult led the team with nine points each in the first half. Moult also had a team-high five rebounds in the first half. The Bulldogs limited SMU to 20 first half points. The Mustangs shot 25 percent from the field against the `Dogs in the first half.
Parrish sank a 3-pointer a foot behind the arc that ended the first half. Fresno State headed to the locker room with a 39-20 lead over SMU. The Bulldogs are 3-1 when leading at halftime.
Moult and Moore were named to the Hoops for the Cure All-Tournament team. Moore was named MVP of the tournament.
Fresno State returns to the Save Mart Center on Dec. 1 to host Oregon. December Madness continues on Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 as Stanford and Oklahoma also come to the SMC.
