DENVER, Colo. - Fresno State's Remi Boutillier and Marianne Jodoin have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Month, respectively, for the month of October.
Boutillier, a senior from Briancon, France, went 3-1 in singles play with a pair of victories over the No. 44 and No. 18 ranked players in the nation. His one loss was a three-set defeat to Georgia's Wil Spencer, who is ranked No. 6. He became the first Bulldog since 2008 to make the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Tournament. At the prestigious tournament, Boutillier made it all the way to semifinals, competing against a top-ranked player. Boutillier qualified for the National Indoor Competition in New York, Nov. 3-6, where he will be the only player representing the WAC in singles play. In doubles play, Boutillier and partner Francis Alcantara made it to the championship match at the Southwest Regional and fell to San Diego's Bubnic/Visy. During the month, the duo also defeated the No. 14 ranked doubles pair in the nation.
A sophomore from Verennes, Quebec, Jodoin had a 4-2 singles record for the month, with her two losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents - a three-set defeat to the nation's No. 1 ranked singles player, Jana Juricova from California and a loss to No. 31 Brynn Boren of Tennessee. Her four singles victories were all in straight sets and her loss to Juricova came in the quarterfinals in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. In doubles at the prestigious ITA All-American Tournament, she and partner Laura Pola advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating UCLA's Seguso and Morton, 8-5 in the Round of 32. Their Round of 16 loss came to Vanderbilt's Wu/Mira, who are both ranked in the ITA doubles rankings.
Boutillier is back on the courts this weekend when he plays in the National Indoor Competition in Queens, N.Y., Nov. 3-6. He is the only player from the WAC competing and he gets another shot at Georgia's Spencer in the Round of 32 on Thursday at 10 a.m.
Jodoin and the women's team is off to Phoenix, Ariz. this weekend for the ASU Invitational that starts on Friday, Nov. 4.
