FRESNO, Calif. - At the first double dual-meet of the season, freshman Courtney Sheehan delivered a dynamic performance winning the 1650 and 500 yard freestyle and took a close third in the 200 yard freestyle as the 'Dogs went 1-1 on the day.
"We had some outstanding swims today," head coach Jeanne Fleck said. "Courtney Sheehan won the mile and was really fast with 17:28.30. She also won the 500 and took third in the 200 free. She had some really dynamic swims today, and she even had negative splits in the 1650."
Sheehan, a freshman from Waukesha, Wis., swam her hardest in each event. The 200 yard freestyle was directly after the 1650 and Sheehan placed third coming in only a second behind the first place finisher.
The Bulldogs beat Seattle University 142-63 and lost to the University of Pacific 93-112, going 1-1 for the day.
"We had some really great swims today," said Fleck. "I am proud of the girls. We are making strides in the right direction."
After starting the meet over an hour late waiting for a team to show up and the cold weather, the Bulldogs performed well in the pool, swimming for some solid season best times.
"We had a lot of season bests today," said Fleck. "Heidi won the 200 backstroke and Dani won the 50 freestyle. Buna swam the mile [1650] well and did the 200 IM with her season best. Britney Vogel went after it like a champ in the breaststroke. It was good to see that character."
Freshman Lucy Titchin came in a close second in the 200 yard freestyle setting a new season best for Fresno State with a time of 1:54.67. Titchin also set a season best with a 53.26 in the 100 yard freestyle. Dani Yoho won the 50 yard freestyle tying her season best score at 23.85.
Michelle Dockendorf swam a quick 200 IM breaking her previous season best time of 2:12.19 with a new time of 2:11.77, shedding 23 tenths of a second off.
Norway native Heidi Gjoen took first in the 200 yard backstroke blowing more than half a second off her previous season best time of 2:08.87 down to a 2:08.06.
Sheehan's season best time in the 500 yard freestyle before today's meet was 5:08.32, but after a speedy swim she knocked over four seconds off that time coming in at 5:04.30.
"The team responded really well today," said Fleck. "The team is getting there and if we would have had diving today we definitely would have won. The divers did a good job down at USC; there are a lot of good teams diving there."
The 'Dogs who are now 2-2 on the season, return home to the Fresno State Aquatics Center Saturday, Nov. 12 against UC Davis at noon.
"We Are Your Team!" - The Fresno State divers will compete in the 3-meter diving event Saturday, Nov. 5 on day two at the USC Diving Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif.
